Time moves so fast, one and a half year passed so quickly, we are going to leave each other and embark on a new journey. I still remember the time when we first met each other, and we were not close at all during the beginning of the year, but look, now we already got closer. =) But the sad thing is we are going to separate. All the moments that we laughed and played together will be remembered and kept in my heart, i will not forget PL2. After this we don't know when and where will we meet again, so don't forget to keep in touch! Love and miss you all =)

Do Parents Name their Children "Lucifer"?

Mr Andrew asked the Literature class to see if the name "Lucifer" is included under baby names. While I couldn't it in any baby name websites, Yahoo!Answers had this:

My husband and I have actually had that discussion. Lucifer, if you can get beyond its traditional usage, is really a beautiful name. It means "bringer of light" or "morning star," and it flows nicely. Unfortunately, most people will not be able to get beyond the fact that it has been used as an alternate name for Satan. We just had to ditch the idea when we thought of what my husband's very traditional grandmother would say...So in summary, Lucifer is a very pleasant-sounding name with a nice meaning, but it is probably not a good thing to actually name a child. I'm hoping that somebody has the guts to reclaim it, but it won't be me.

Well... sounds like quite a nice name for such an evil person...

The Nun’s Priest’s Tale is one of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. It contains a passing reference to the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 and for that reason it is believed to have been written some time in the mid-1380s. Although it is highly prized as a treasure of English literature, its worth as a classic of early English philosophy has been much less appreciated. In that respect, its format, being a work of humorous verse, has been a drawback, obscuring the fact that it deals with philosophical issues of mind, body, freewill and determinism. Behind the colourful display of medieval romance and comedy, a sharp intelligence is at work, comparing human with animal behaviour and challenging us to clarify our belief that free will is a distinguishing feature of human actions.

The story of the vain cock and the cunning fox was an ancient folk-tale even in Chaucer’s time. It is a fable, closely related to those gathered by Aesop in the sixth century BCE, which the Romans later spread across Europe. Several medieval versions survive, including one in the Roman de Renard from the 12^th century which gives the cock the same name as in Chaucer’s version, ie. Chauntecler. The medieval audience which heard or read Chaucer’s Tale would probably have been familiar with the basic story-line.

Thus the very act of telling the Tale becomes an illustration of one of the philosophical issues: the freedom that Chaucer has as a creative artist is bound within the limits of the traditional tale. The audience know that Chauntecler will escape by tricking the fox in the same way that the cock himself was tricked, but they do not know how that conclusion will be reached. The Tale has new details, new dialogue and new events, all the creation of Chaucer, and so the audience find it a fresh, unpredictable telling of the Tale, even though they know the final outcome. In this way free choice and predestination are combined. Chaucer has free choice in the way he tells the Tale, but his freedom is limited by the necessity of the predetermined conclusion. Conversely, the audience have foreknowledge in that they know how the Tale will end, but their knowledge is incomplete since they do not know how Chaucer will bring them to that conclusion.

The issue of free choice and foreknowledge is first broached in the Tale through a discussion of the nature of dreams. Chauntecler has had a frightening dream in which a beast seized him and tried to kill him. Believing the dream to be a premonition, he tells his lady-love, Pertelote the hen, about it, but she heaps scorn upon his fear, telling him that dreams are caused by overeating and that all he needs is a laxative. Pertelote appears to be a materialist in her outlook, relegating dreams to the world of causes and treating them as ephemeral by-products like bubbles on the surface of a stream. Chauntecler disagrees. For him, dreams belong to the world of intentions and he believes that his dream is a warning of impending disaster. He cites several classical authors in support of his opinion and his trump card, given the hegemonic role of religion in medieval culture, is to refer to examples of dreams-as-warnings in the Bible. So Chauntecler has Biblical authority for believing that dreams can be premonitions of events to come.

The problem of free will versus predestination soon follows. If a dream can represent truthfully a future state of affairs, then that scenario must in some sense already exist. The future must already be mapped out so that the prophetic dreamer can catch a glimpse of it. If the future was a nothing, because future events have not yet happened, then there would be nothing for the dreamer to see.

Prediction, as practised by prophetic dreamers, is a form of foreknowledge. It is a patchy version of the total foreknowledge attributed to God. Patchy or total, however, foreknowledge runs counter to common sense belief in free will. If certain scenarios have been foreseen and are therefore inevitable, the human agents involved can have no real freedom of action. Otherwise, they could spoil the predicted scenarios, making choices which result in different scenarios and thereby reducing God’s foreknowledge to mere guesswork. The actions of a free agent must be unpredictable, if the agent is truly free to act as he or she thinks fit. Therefore predictable scenarios, including the whole future as claimed for God’s foreknowledge, cannot include any free agents.

Chaucer refers to the great debate on this issue among theologians, mentioning Augustine, Boethius and his own contemporary, Bradwardine. They regarded God’s absolute foreknowledge as a given and then endeavoured to accommodate human free will within that framework. Chaucer expresses the contradiction between foreknowledge and free will thus (lines 477ff):

"Wheither that Goddes worthy forwityng {Whether God’s divine foreknowledge

Streyneth me nedely for to doon a thyng, {compels me of necessity to do a thing,

…Or elles if free choys be graunted me {or if free choice be granted me

To do that same thyng or do it noght…." { to do that thing or not …

The conclusion that Chaucer seems to favour is that of limited free choice, or ‘conditional necessity’. This means that God, like the audience for the Tale, knows what the outcome will be, but free will is granted in the choice of pathway to that destination. This solution is unsatisfactory. First, it allows only patchy foreknowledge, ie. the conclusion is known, not the path taken, but God’s foreknowledge is supposed to be total. Secondly, it relegates free choice to minor matters of detail while accepting determinism for the great decisions of life, ie. you can decide to wear pink socks but you cannot do anything about going to heaven or hell. So the theological paradox is not solved by introducing ‘conditional necessity.’

Cast in religious terms, this debate is of limited interest to a modern audience. Once you cease to believe in God, problems arising from his alleged foreknowledge evaporate immediately. But there is more to this issue than mere theological dispute. The extent to which we humans have free will, if at all, is still a valid question and Chaucer shows that he is aware of the non-religious aspects too. Remove God’s foreknowledge from the problem and other deterministic factors loom large. Character is shown to be one such factor.

In Chaucer’s version of the tale much emphasis is placed on the different characters of the protagonists. They act as they do because that is the nature of their characters. Chauntecler is vain and therefore his actions tend to follow a pattern. For example, he has the choice whether to heed his dream and stay out of harm’s way on his perch, or to ignore it and display his fine feathers in the yard as usual. True to his character, he chooses the latter course. He is driven by his vanity and the fox exploits that weakness in order to seize him. For his part, the fox is cunning and ruthless. Flattery and deceit come easy to him. His actions are all of a kind and show the set traits of his character. As for Pertelote, she is domineering and dim-witted. Her arguments are deeply flawed, but she pronounces them with great conviction. She fails to distinguish between courage and foolhardiness and demands both of Chauntecler as proof of his manhood. Her actions tend to hasten the disaster and her character causes her to commit those actions.

A medieval account of character differs from ours today because it involved astrology and the theory of the humours (choler, melancholy, sanguinity and phlegm). The configurations of the stars and the mixture of humours in the body were thought to influence a person’s actions and to shape his or her character. This deterministic view of character has its modern counterpart in the belief that the body is best understood in terms of genetics, hormones and nutrition, while social conditioning and personal experience contribute to a person’s psychological formation. Thus, if someone is suffering from depression, all those various factors will be examined to see what is causing the depression. In a less acute form, depression may be thought of as simply sadness, or perhaps as a habitually pessimistic outlook. Thus we move from the medical condition, depression, to a consideration of character, thought of as an accumulation of habits and assumptions, an accretion which produces an identifiable pattern of behaviour. Our freedom of action is therefore constrained by factors which derive from our personal histories and physical constitutions.

Vanity is a human character trait. The rapacity of the fox, however, shades over into instinctual animal behaviour. When we describe animal behaviour we often attribute it to instinct and thereby deny that any free will was involved. A young cuckoo, for example, never meets its natural parents. It is reared by an unsuspecting host of a different species and yet, at maturity, it behaves like a cuckoo and acts out its parasitic role by instinct. We now think of instinct as behaviour which is programmed into an organism as part of its genetic make-up.

The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales shows that Chaucer was prepared to link humans and animals in terms of instinctual patterns of behaviour. He says that Spring revives all of nature: the sun returns and it wakens the seeds, it starts the birds singing, and it inspires people to go on pilgrimages.

"So priketh hem nature in hir corages" (l. 11) {Thus Nature drives them in their inclinations

No doubt Chaucer makes this comparison with a mildly humorous intent, but that does not detract from its validity.

However, the more significant forms of instinctual behaviour in humans are to do with sex and parenting. We humans have evolved differently from our close relatives, the other species in the mammal group, but the basic functions of sex and parenting are not so different. Such basic functions have been programmed into us by long millennia of evolution, some of which we share with the other mammals in terms of our common ancestors. Unfortunately for Chaucer, he lived in pre-scientific times, five centuries before Darwin and had no conception of the real links between humans and other animal species. Nevertheless, he can see that sex is a driving force in human and in animal behaviour.

Chauntecler, who is of course the cock of the story, is at times driven by lust. Thus, although he speaks at length on the life-threatening danger which he believes is imminent, he ignores all his own reasoning and flies down into the yard because of his passion for Pertelote (lines 410ff)

"Real he was, he was namore aferd; {Royal he was, he was no more afraid;

He fethered Pertelote twenty tyme, {he caressed Pertelote twenty times

And trad as ofte, er that it was prime." {and mounted her as often, before morning.

Chauntecler cannot follow the advice that his own arguments provided. His lust drives him to have sex with Pertelote twenty times and his vanity drives him to strut around the yard in his pride at his accomplishments. His reason is the slave of his passions, to use Hume’s phrase. He knows what he ought to do, but the force of reason cannot compete with the other forces that are driving him.

Chaucer did not have the benefit of being able to refer to studies in comparative psychology and zoology, etc., but his observations accord well with the way we now think of, for example, the role of sex hormones in explaining behaviour patterns. Human freedom is limited by the fact that we are essentially bodies and therefore subject to biological imperatives which drive our behaviour, just as they drive the rest of the biosphere. The cocks and hens which mate and procreate in the farmyard are obeying instincts which are also seen to operate in human life. Part of the comedy of the Tale is to see the similarity between human sexual behaviour, for example, courtship rituals, and animal behaviour where we see similar forms of competitive display. The preening and strutting of Chauntecler in the farmyard is both a satirical comment on human sexually-motivated display and a realistic description of instinctual animal behaviour.

So far we have only considered the ways in which causal factors shape human behaviour. Clearly, human freedom has its limitations. But are there grounds for thinking that we have any freedom at all? Is it possible that free choice is an illusion and that causal explanation is all that is required?

In theological terms, insisting upon God’s absolute foreknowledge can lead to the complete denial of human freedom. Predestination theologies, which segregate people into the Damned and the Elect from the moment of birth, sacrifice freedom in order to admit absolute foreknowledge. Likewise, in scientific terms, an uncompromising belief in the methodological principle that every event has a cause leads to a similar conclusion: human behaviour is governed by causal laws which admit no exceptions and therefore no free choice.

But human freedom is easy to prove. You tell me what you predict that I am going to do and I shall disprove the prediction. Even if you gather up all the causal information that is possible in order to make your prediction, I shall prove my freedom by breaking your prediction. The same applies to God’s foreknowledge: if God tells me what She "knows" I am going to do, I shall have no hesitation in doing something quite different. Confounding predictions is one way to exercise freedom.

The basis of our freedom is surely language. Language gives us the ability to model different possible futures. We can describe different scenarios and compare them. On the basis of that comparison, we can then decide which course of action to take. Thus language lifts us out of the ruts of necessity and gives us the power to choose. We are enslaved neither by God’s foreknowledge nor by the chains of universal causality.

But let us not overstate the case. We are not creatures of pure reason, mere sentence-makers living in a realm of words. No, we are flesh and blood bodies, immersed in the world of causal connections, but able to use language to give us leverage on the world. Human behaviour is therefore a mixture of freedom and necessity.

On this point Chaucer succumbs to comedy. The traditional folktale which forms the basis of his Tale clouds the argument about human freedom by granting the power of language to birds and animals. The essentially human attribute of speech is given to Chauntecler, Pertelote and Russell, the fox. Here Chaucer follows tradition, but he adds to it by making his characters speak in a ridiculously learned and oratorical style. All three characters cite Roman and Greek writers as authorities and their speeches are in the manner of learned disputation. In this way Chaucer applies a reductio ad absurdum to the notion that animals could have the power of language. So the opposite is implied: that language is a distinctly human activity. Language gives humans a freedom which animals lack.

It is noteworthy too that the Tale ends with an appeal to the audience (line 672ff)

"But ye that holden this tale a folye {As for you who think this tale a silly thing

As of a fox, or of a cok and hen, {dealing with a fox, or a cock and hen,

Taketh the moralite, goode men." {take the moral from it, good sirs.

The whole point of a moral tale is to make the audience think again – to make them think about the turning points in the narrative and apply them to their own lives, eg. Chauntecler courting disaster by yielding to lust. The moral tale is a clear representative of the power of language. It asks the audience to model different scenarios and to amend their lives in the light of those models. Are you vain? Do you have bad habits? Do you give in to lust? These are the familiar challenges of the moral fable and Chaucer implies them in his reference to ‘the moralite’. But they have added resonance after the points that Chaucer has made in the course of the Tale. The moral challenge assumes that there is freedom of action, freedom to change one’s ways and be a better person. The moral challenge uses language to present different possible futures and exhorts us, as language users, to think through the possibilities and choose the better way. We do not have total freedom, but we are not helpless in the face of Destiny.

In conclusion, I have a confession and an attempted vindication. No doubt in my attempt to provide a commentary on Chaucer’s Tale, I may have grafted some ideas of my own onto his. For example, I do not deny that there is a change of emphasis in this essay from Chaucer’s conditional necessity to limited freedom. Perhaps it is more than just a change of emphasis. But I feel sure that Chaucer would have appreciated the way that the resulting combination of ideas illustrates yet again the interplay of freedom and necessity: my freedom to interpret, extrapolate and (yes) distort, operates within the necessity to acknowledge the ideas and insights which Chaucer has left us in his work. We are indeed fortunate to have this record of his wit and thought. His words enhance our freedom.

Reading Shakespeare has dramatic effect on human brainDecember 18th, 2006 -->
Research at the University of Liverpool has found that Shakespearean language excites positive brain activity, adding further drama to the bard's plays and poetry.

Shakespeare uses a linguistic technique known as functional shift that involves, for example using a noun to serve as a verb. Researchers found that this technique allows the brain to understand what a word means before it understands the function of the word within a sentence. This process causes a sudden peak in brain activity and forces the brain to work backwards in order to fully understand what Shakespeare is trying to say.

Professor Philip Davis, from the University's School of English, said: "The brain reacts to reading a phrase such as ‘he godded me' from the tragedy of Coriolanus, in a similar way to putting a jigsaw puzzle together. If it is easy to see which pieces slot together you become bored of the game, but if the pieces don't appear to fit, when we know they should, the brain becomes excited. By throwing odd words into seemingly normal sentences, Shakespeare surprises the brain and catches it off guard in a manner that produces a sudden burst of activity - a sense of drama created out of the simplest of things."

Experts believe that this heightened brain activity may be one of the reasons why Shakespeare's plays have such a dramatic impact on their readers.

Professor Neil Roberts, from the University's Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Research Centre, (MARIARC), explains: "The effect on the brain is a bit like a magic trick; we know what the trick means but not how it happened. Instead of being confused by this in a negative sense, the brain is positively excited. The brain signature is relatively uneventful when we understand the meaning of a word but when the word changes the grammar of the whole sentence, brain readings suddenly peak. The brain is then forced to retrace its thinking process in order to understand what it is supposed to make of this unusual word."

Professor Roberts and Professor Davis together with Dr Guillaune Thierry, from the University of Wales, Bangor, monitored 20 participants using an electroencephalogram (EEG) as they read selected lines from Shakespeare's plays.
In this initial test electrodes were placed on the subject's scalp to measure brain responses.

Professor Roberts said: "EEG gives graph-like measurements and when the brain reads a sentence that does not make semantic sense it registers what we call a N400 effect – a negative wave modulation. When the brain reads a grammatically incorrect sentence it registers a P600 effect – an effect which continues to last after the word that triggered it was first read."

Researchers also found that when participants read the word producing the functional shift there was no N400 effect indicating that the meaning was accepted but a P600 effect was observed which indicates a positive re-evaluation of the word. The team is now using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMI) to test which areas of the brain are most affected and the kind of impact it could have in maintaining healthy brain activity.

Professor Davis added: "This interdisciplinary work is good for brain science because it offers permanent scripts of the human mind working moment-to-moment. It is good for literature as it illustrates primary human thinking. Through the two disciplines, we may discover new insights into the very motions of the mind."

Viola

Like most of Shakespeare’s heroines, Viola is a tremendously likable figure. She has no serious faults, and we can easily discount the peculiarity of her decision to dress as a man, since it sets the entire plot in motion. She is the character whose love seems the purest. The other characters’ passions are fickle: Orsino jumps from Olivia to Viola, Olivia jumps from Viola to Sebastian, and Sir Toby and Maria’s marriage seems more a matter of whim than an expression of deep and abiding passion. Only Viola seems to be truly, passionately in love as opposed to being self-indulgently lovesick. As she says to Orsino, describing herself and her love for him:

She pined in thought,
And with a green and yellow melancholy
She sat like patience on a monument,
Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?
(II.iv.111–114)

The audience, like Orsino, can only answer with an emphatic yes.

Viola’s chief problem throughout the play is one of identity. Because of her disguise, she must be both herself and Cesario. This mounting identity crisis culminates in the final scene, when Viola finds herself surrounded by people who each have a different idea of who she is and are unaware of who she actually is. Were Twelfth Night not a comedy, this pressure might cause Viola to break down. Sebastian’s appearance at this point, however, effectively saves Viola by allowing her to be herself again. Sebastian, who independent of his sister is not much of a character, takes over the aspects of Viola’s disguise that she no longer wishes to maintain. Thus liberated by her brother, Viola is free to shed the roles that she has accumulated throughout the play, and she can return to being Viola, the woman who has loved and won Orsino.

Orsino and Olivia

Orsino and Olivia are worth discussing together, because they have similar personalities. Both claim to be buffeted by strong emotions, but both ultimately seem to be self-indulgent individuals who enjoy melodrama and self-involvement more than anything. When we first meet them, Orsino is pining away for love of Olivia, while Olivia pines away for her dead brother. They show no interest in relating to the outside world, preferring to lock themselves up with their sorrows and mope around their homes.

Viola’s arrival begins to break both characters out of their self-involved shells, but neither undergoes a clear-cut change. Orsino relates to Viola in a way that he never has to Olivia, diminishing his self-involvement and making him more likable. Yet he persists in his belief that he is in love with Olivia until the final scene, in spite of the fact that he never once speaks to her during the course of the play. Olivia, meanwhile, sets aside her grief when Viola (disguised as Cesario) comes to see her. But Olivia takes up her own fantasy of lovesickness, in which she pines away—with a self-indulgence that mirrors Orsino’s—for a man who is really a woman. Ultimately, Orsino and Olivia seem to be out of touch with real emotion, as demonstrated by the ease with which they shift their affections in the final scene—Orsino from Olivia to Viola, and Olivia from Cesario to Sebastian. The similarity between Orsino and Olivia does not diminish with the end of the play, since the audience realizes that by marrying Viola and Sebastian, respectively, Orsino and Olivia are essentially marrying female and male versions of the same person.

Malvolio

Malvolio initially seems to be a minor character, and his humiliation seems little more than an amusing subplot to the Viola-Olivia-Orsino- love triangle. But he becomes more interesting as the play progresses, and most critics have judged him one of the most complex and fascinating characters in Twelfth Night. When we first meet Malvolio, he seems to be a simple type—a puritan, a stiff and proper servant who likes nothing better than to spoil other people’s fun. It is this dour, fun-despising side that earns him the enmity of the zany, drunken Sir Toby and the clever Maria, who together engineer his downfall. But they do so by playing on a side of Malvolio that might have otherwise remained hidden—his self-regard and his remarkable ambitions, which extend to marrying Olivia and becoming, as he puts it, “Count Malvolio” (II.v.30).

When he finds the forged letter from Olivia (actually penned by Maria) that seems to offer hope to his ambitions, Malvolio undergoes his first transformation—from a stiff and wooden embodiment of priggish propriety into an personification of the power of self--delusion. He is ridiculous in these scenes, as he capers around in the yellow stockings and crossed garters that he thinks will please Olivia, but he also becomes pitiable. He may deserve his come-uppance, but there is an uncomfortable universality to his experience. Malvolio’s misfortune is a cautionary tale of ambition overcoming good sense, and the audience winces at the way he adapts every event—including Olivia’s confused assumption that he must be mad—to fit his rosy picture of his glorious future as a nobleman. Earlier, he embodies stiff joylessness; now he is joyful, but in pursuit of a dream that everyone, except him, knows is false.

Our pity for Malvolio only increases when the vindictive Maria and Toby confine him to a dark room in Act IV. As he desperately protests that he is not mad, Malvolio begins to seem more of a victim than a victimizer. It is as if the unfortunate steward, as the embodiment of order and sobriety, must be sacrificed so that the rest of the characters can indulge in the hearty spirit that suffuses Twelfth Night. As he is sacrificed, Malvolio begins to earn our respect. It is too much to call him a tragic figure, however—after all, he is only being asked to endure a single night in darkness, hardly a fate comparable to the sufferings of King Lear or Hamlet. But there is a kind of nobility, however limited, in the way that the deluded steward stubbornly clings to his sanity, even in the face of Feste’s insistence that he is mad. Malvolio remains true to himself, despite everything: he knows that he is sane, and he will not allow anything to destroy this knowledge.

Malvolio (and the audience) must be content with this self-knowledge, because the play allows Malvolio no real recompense for his sufferings. At the close of the play, he is brought out of the darkness into a celebration in which he has no part, and where no one seems willing to offer him a real apology. “I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you,” he snarls, stalking out of the festivities (V.i.365). His exit strikes a jarring note in an otherwise joyful comedy. Malvolio has no real place in the anarchic world of Twelfth Night, except to suggest that, even in the best of worlds, someone must suffer while everyone else is happy.

George Kamaruddin's Study of Suicide

George found that individuals who devoted most of their time in reading the sociology textbook by Haralambos and Holborn had more tendency to commit suicide. He rejected the claim of Emile Durkheim that lack of integration is the cause of suicide. Instead, he believed that the stress incurred from reading the text was a greater factor in contributing to students committing suicide. It also contributed to the deteriorating eyesights of students and the increased rate of insanity amongst college students.

Critiques of Kamaruddinism
Muhammad Azim rejected the claim that the intense pressure developed from reading the text was the sole reason for suicide amongst sociolosgy students.Instead, he believed that the constant complaints by a certain 'sociologist' named Ophelia had greater effect in one committing suicide. Also, the uncertainty of Ophelia's sexual orientation too was a worry for both male and female students. This is due to the fact that Ophelia had several other identities.Namely, Ophelia, Pinky fried onion and Yaw Ern Nian.This multiple identities have led to confusion amongst his peers and led them to believe that Ophelia is screwed in the head.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare: Appearances Versus Reality:

Many of the problems and confusions in Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night" are the result of gender bending episodes, many of which involve disguise and deceit of one form or another. In the most prominent examples of disguise and appearance versus reality in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, appearances hide an important reality and sometimes actually hinder a character from developing or attaining his or her desire. Certainly, Viola in "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare is the clearest example since her love for Orsino must go unrecognized until the appearance is exchanged for reality.

Furthermore, the problems associated with deceit and reality create tension in "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare, especially in the case of Malvolio. In addition to these more explicit examples of appearances not matching reality, there are other aspects to the play that are not entirely clear in terms of gender. For example, the typical love relationships in "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare, especially between men, are often confused and somewhat ambiguous. Although by the end of "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare, the reader is assured by the marriages and heterosexual unions of the central characters, one cannot completely ignore the larger implications and suggestions made such episodes of gender bending. The comedic nature of Twelfth Night is produced as a result of these mix-ups and without them, this could easily have been a tragedy in which frustrated lovers were scorned and siblings were lost and mourned for years.

The action of "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare is driven by Viola’s decision to voluntarily conceal her identity and go to work as a servant for the lovesick Orsino instead of Olivia. In one of the important quotes from Twelfth Night by Shakespeare She tells the Captain that she wishes to become a eunuch and begs him to, “Conceal me what I am, and be my aid / For such disguise as haply shall become / The form of my intent” (I.ii.51-53). This disguise and gender confusion early in the play serves Viola quite well in the beginning, especially since she is a young woman alone in a strange city. With this vulnerability removed, she is now free to seek employment although she does not figure it will cause her as much trouble as it does. In the case of Viola/Cesario the appearance constitutes the reality for other characters, but of course, not for herself. As her love for her master grows, she finds herself wishing for the reality but is now so embroiled in events that she cannot turn back. She expresses her tension when she states, “O time, thou must untangle this, not I. / It is too hard a knot for me t’ untie” (II.ii.38-39) but realizes that she cannot, at this point at least, reveal her identity—the reality behind the appearance. There is a sense of hopelessness in the battle between what one sees and what is truth and it is best summed at the climax of this identity conflict when Viola, realizing that Olivia loves her/him, says, “Poor lady, she were better love a dream” (II.ii.24). In other words, the dream is the appearance while the reality is unattainable because of it. It is only through another case of mistaken identity (the arrival of her brother) that she allowed to shed the appearance and engage in the reality.

Through means of deceit, appearances and reality are confused as well in Twelfth Night. This is most obvious in the case of the trick played upon Malvolio. Interestingly, he is a character that is not necessarily likable, especially when we first encounter him, but at least he is one of the few that does not seem to have any kind of disguise other than the fact that his simple background does not match up with the grand vision he has of being “Count Malvolio.” Despite his outward participation in creating an appearance to replace reality, he still is a victim of this paradigm in his own thoughts. He has an enormous ego that allows him to look only at the outward appearances rather than into the deeper truth or reality and gladly takes on another appearance to satisfy the conditions set forth to (supposedly) make his wish reality. Malvolio grows into the role of the love object (which can be seen as a disguise of sorts) and wears the yellow stockings because he has been misled. His behavior echoes the words of Orsino, who laments, “So full of shapes is fancy / That it alone is high fantastical” (I.i.14-15). In this line, Orsino is stating that “fancy” or romantic love is fantastical and not associated with reality. Whether it is Malvolio acting as a fool for love or Orsino who wishes only to lay about all day thinking about his Olivia in the beginning, the two themes are clear—love itself is the ultimate form appearances trumping reality and appearances, when taken too lightly, begin dictating reality.

Appearances versus reality are also an issue for the reader of Twelfth Night as well as the characters. The play opens with a character deciding to take on another gender appearance and although there are characters who never take a formal disguise, gender identities and love interests still seem less than traditional throughout the play. For example, while it is almost expected that Viola/Cesario might have an inclination to love her master, it twists the situation later when the reader begins to see that perhaps Orsino might have a love interest in his boy servant. Even after Viola’s true appearance and reality is exposed and confirmed, Orsino still has a strange attachment to the idea of being more in love with the boy rather than the female behind him. At one point near the end, Orsino says, “Cesario, come— / For so you shall be while you are a man; / but when in other habits you are seen, / Orsino’s mistress and his fancy’s queen” (V.i.372-375) and this demonstrates that there is still an interchangeable nature to the gender and thus the reality over appearance in this situation. A similar example of unexpected love crossing gender lines can also be seen in the case of Antonio who follows Sebastian, not necessarily out of some sense of manly duty it seems, but rather because of “desire/ More sharp than filed steel” (III.iii.4-5). While none of these less traditional gender pairings are ever confirmed by the ending, they give the play an even more confusing quality and bring the question of what appearances versus reality really means in any case.

In sum, it seems as though Shakespeare wishes audiences to consider the true nature of reality when a multitude of appearances can have an effect on our perception of it. Also, by presenting the issue of appearances versus reality in so many contexts (cross-dressing, outright trickery, mistaken identity, and ambiguous love pairings) the reader is made to understand that appearances can sometimes be of little or no value. If all of the characters had been more in tune with reality rather than centering on their own and other characters’ appearances, one can easily assume this wouldn’t make such a grand comedy.

Twelfth Night - Analysis of Fools

A fool can be defined in many meanings according to the
Oxford English Dictionary On Historical Principles. The word
could mean "a silly person", or "one who professionally
counterfeits folly for the entertainment of others, a jester,
clown" or "one who has little or no reason or intellect" or
"one who is made to appear to be a fool" (word originated from
North Frisian). In english literature, the two main ways which
the fool could enter imaginative literature is that "He could
provide a topic, a theme for mediation, or he could turn into a
stock character on the stage, a stylized comic figure". In
William Shakespeare's comedy, Twelfth Night, Feste the clown is
not the only fool who is subject to foolery. He and many other
characters combine their silly acts and wits to invade other
characters that "evade reality or rather realize a dream", while
"our sympathies go out to those". "It is natural that the fool
should be a prominent & attractive figure and make an important
contribution to the action" in forming the confusion and the
humor in an Elizabethan drama. In Twelfth Night, the clown and
the fools are the ones who combine humor & wit to make the comedy
work.

Clowns, jesters, and Buffoons are usually regarded as fools.
Their differences could be of how they dress, act or portrayed in
society. A clown for example, "was understood to be a country
bumpkin or 'cloun'". In Elizabethan usage, the word 'clown' is
ambiguous "meaning both countryman and principal comedian".
Another meaning given to it in the 1600 is "a fool or jester".
As for a buffoon, it is defined as "a man whose profession is to
make low jests and antics postures; a clown, jester, fool".
The buffoon is a fool because "although he exploits his own
weaknesses instead of being exploited by others....he resembles
other comic fools". This is similar to the definition of a
'Jester' who is also known as a "buffoon, or a merry andrew. One
maintained in a prince's court or nobleman's household". As
you can see, the buffoon, jester and the clown are all depicted
as fools and are related & tied to each other in some sort of
way. They relatively have the same objectives in their roles but
in appearance wise (clothes, physical features) they may be
different. In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Feste's role in this
Illyrian comedy is significant because "Illyria is a country
permeated with the spirit of the Feast of Fools, where identities
are confused, 'uncivil rule' applauded...and no harm is done".
"In Illyria therefore the fool is not so much a critic of his
environment as a ringleader, a merry-companion, a Lord of
Misrule. Being equally welcome above and below stairs.." makes
Feste significant as a character. In Twelfth Night, Feste plays
the role of a humble clown employed by Olivia's father playing
the licensed fool of their household. We learn this in Olivia's
statement stating that Feste is "an allowed fool"(I.v.93) meaning
he is licensed, privileged critic to speak the truth of the
people around him. We also learn in a statement by Curio to the
Duke that Feste is employed by Olivia's father. "Feste the
jester... a fool that the Lady Olivia's father took much pleasure
in"(II.iv.11).

Feste is more of the comic truth of the comedy. Although he
does not make any profound remarks, he seems to be the wisest
person within all the characters in the comedy. Viola remarks
this by saying "This fellow's wise enough to play the
fool"(III.i.61). Since Feste is a licensed fool, his main role
in Twelfth Night is to speak the truth. This is where the humor
lies, his truthfulness. In one example he proves Olivia to be a
true fool by asking her what she was mourning about. The point
Feste tried to make was why was Olivia mourning for a person
who's soul is in heaven?

"CLOWN Good madonna, why mourn'st thou?
OLIVIA Good Fool, for my brother's death.
CLOWN I think his soul is in hell, madonna.
OLIVIA I know his soul is in heaven, fool.
CLOWN The more fool, madonna, to mourn for your
brother's soul, being in heaven. Take away the fool,
gentlemen.

Adding to the humor of the comedy, Feste, dresses up as Sir
Topaz, the curate and visits the imprisoned Malvolio with Maria
and Sir Toby. There he uses his humor to abuse Malvolio
who is still unaware that he is actually talking to the clown
than to the real Sir Topas. Feste (disguised as Sir Topaz)
calls Malvolio a "lunatic" (IV.ii.23), "satan"(IV.ii.32) and
confuses him by wittingly making him a fool.

Throughout the play, Malvolio has always been the person who
intentionally spoils the pleasure of other people(killjoy). He
is Feste's worst nightmare in the play, but in the end is
triumphed over by Feste completely and is the only character to
show a negative attitude and a dignity reversed.
"MALVOLIO: I'll be revenged on the whole pack of you!"
(V.i.378) At the end of the comedy, Feste, "is given the
last word and is left in possession of the stage".
Maria, Olivia's companion is another person who seems
enthusiastic in playing pranks on other people. In Twelfth
Night, she plays the unsuspecting role of a behind the scene
fool who gives ideas to Feste, Sir Andrew & Sir Toby to
assist her in her plans. In two incidents, she remains quiet
while her plans are carried out by either the Knights or the
Clown.

Part of the humor that lies in this comedy is that Maria's
pranks are harsh & cruel, using love and power (status of Olivia)
to attack Malvolio, steward of Olivia, who is "....sick of self
love"(I.v.90). For this, Malvolio's greed for power ends
himself locked up in a dark cell and is accused of being mad.
She also prepares Feste to disguise as Sir Topaz. This is seen
in the quote: "Nay,I prithee put on this gown and this beard;
make him believe thou are Sir Topas the curate; do it quickly.
I'll call Sir Toby the whilst." (IV.ii.1,2,3) Combined with other
fools, Maria helps make Twelfth Night a hilariously funny comedy.
Lastly, Sir Toby Belch is another fool in Twelfth Night.
His role is helping "on the game of make-believe". Always
convincing & encouraging the rich Sir Andrew Aguecheek that he
has a chance of winning Lady Olivia's love. He is similar to
Feste, except he plays the role of a knight and is Olivia's
kinsman. His role is similar to a fool because he depicts many
pranks of a fool. For example in Act II scene iii, while he was
drunk he sings along with Feste when Malvolio barges in to shut
them up. Whenever there is a prank, Maria invites Sir Toby to
participate. One such prank was to assist Maria's fake
letter to make Malvolio think Olivia is in love with
him. Sir Toby's make-believe scheme works convincingly on
Malvolio. Another prank was to accompany the disguised Feste
(Sir Topaz) into the dark cell where Malvolio was imprisoned.
This accompaniment was probably to assure Malvolio that the real
Sir Topaz is visiting him. Yet it is another make-believe scheme
of Sir Toby.

In Twelfth Night, the fools are the ones that control the
comedy and humor in the play. They assist in the make believe
game and fool around with characters who "evade reality or rather
realize a dream". In Twelfth Night, Feste, Maria and Sir Toby
are the fools that make the comedy work in many senses. They
create the confusion through humor and it all works out in the
end to make William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night a really funny
Elizabethan play.

A View From the Bridge: Marco and Eddie’s Character Relationship

How does the relations between Marco and Eddie change throughout the play?

In the play “A View from the Bridge”, the relation between Eddie and Marco changes a lot and worsen as it gets to the end. From the beginning of the play, Eddie already proved his dislike towards Beatrice’s cousins from cousin from coming by telling her to not give a room to them and also saying it’s unnecessary to buy new table cloths to welcome them.
When Marco first arrived, he thought that Eddie was a kind, friendly man and so he had his trust in him and therefore, sent twenty dollars back immediately (believing that he had a stable condition here and could certainly support the his family for the long term).

As the play develops, Rodolfo’s relations with Catherine tighten and lead to Eddie’s jealousy of Rodolfo being so close to Catherine. His dislike of the pair of them increased as Rodolfo tried to go out with Catherine to Broadway. Because of this, Eddie tried to insult Marco by saying that when he went back to Italy, there may be “plenty surprises” and added “…they count the kids and there’s a couple extra then when they left”. This is aiming to insult Marco by suggesting that his wife might be doing prostitution during his absence at work. This is when Marco took notice of the fact that Eddie wasn’t so friendly. Later on, when Rodolfo and Catherine still haven’t lost interest in each other, Eddie pretended to teach Rodolfo how to box, but was actually trying to humiliate his weakness and lack of masculinity. He hurt Rodolfo and therefore Marco felt the responsibility to intervene with what Eddie is doing. This led to the chair scene where the stage direction shows the change in authority between Eddie and Marco through “face to face… tension… raised like a weapon…glare of warning…smile of triumph…Eddie’s grin vanished”. It is the turning point which leads Eddie to become a traitor and report the illegal immigrants (which at the beginning he described as a possible threat that others would do).

When Eddie found out that Rodolfo and Catherine had a sexual intercourse, he was very angry about the illegal immigrants. He tried to find another reason apart from the illegal immigration issue to prevent Rodolfo and Catherine from marrying. There was no way to prevent this marriage apart from reporting them to the immigration department and so he did so. This contradicted to his earlier saying in the play: “I don’t care what question it is. You - don’t - know- nothin’ (won’t be questioned if they are captured)… Vinny… no more than fourteen… he snitched… he was crazy after…”. This sparked rage in Marco and it was shown under the words “He killed my children…stole the food from my children”.

Through his anger, although Alfieri persuaded him not to kill Eddie earlier, Marco turned the knife which Eddie tried to kill him with against Eddie. It led to the final ending to the entire climax which Miller has produced. Through conflict and the urge to revenge, the story ends with Marco turning back the murder Eddie had planned. Power didn’t end up on either one of them because Eddie died and Marco was deported back to Italy. Too much power and power-struggle leads to the conflicts and consequences.

Hamlet here. Today...

Today... I set part one of my plan into action. And it went really well.

As previously wrote. I was going to pretend to be mad. Yes, that's right, madly in love. Love is in the aaaaiiiiirrrrrrr!!! (Hey, I'm pretending to be mad, okay? What if Uncle Claud reads this blog?)

Anyway, so I entered Ophelia's room while she was sewing (even though I'm not allowed inside a ladies room, so what, I'm mad). And in order to look really, really, really mad, my shirt was all undone and my hair was messy and my tights (Yeah, so I wear tights. So what? We all wore tights those days.) were torn and sliding down my legs. In order to look all weak and pathetic I cut my wrist in the bathroom again before this and then I asked Horatio to push me down the hill. In a nutshell, I looked like shit.

That's me. I'm the man.

Ophelia of course was all, *high pitched voice* "Omigosh, omigosh, Hamlet, darling, what's wrong, what happened to you, Hammy baby?"

But I didn't say anything, though I really wanted to slap her. Or kiss her. Or both. Whatever. I just grabbed her hard by the wrist and pushed her against the wall (Oy, I wasn't going to do anything to her, okay. Gosh, you people have a very sick mind.)

Hey baby, nice to see ya.

And then I just stared at her and stared at her and stared at her.... I think she was scared.

This is so totally not gay. Seriously!!

Gay? This? You call two guys looking like they're gonna make out gay? Seriously, man, what's wrong with you?

And then I sighed. And walked away while starring at her all the while.

Yeah, I really think I scared her. I hope she won't be mad at me. Or reject me. Well, she does, I still have Horatio.

Anyway, my plan worked so far. I'm sure Ophelia wil go and tell her father about this. I will work my way up and soon... Claudius will be mine!!!!!! Muahahahahaha!

I was right!!!!

I WAS RIGHT!!!!

Oh, my prophetice soul! I can seeee the FUTURE!!!!

I saw the ghost last night. I went with Horatio and two random soldiers out onto the battlements to wait for it and at midnight...

it came.

(cue dramatic music) Dundundundun...

But--

--first, Horatio and the two dumb guards all whined and moaned that it was cold. Wusses. Then we talked about my dad and how he was so valiant and so strong and how he kicked Fortinbras' fat butt back to Norway... *sob, sob* I really miss you daddy.

And then...

(cue dramatic music) Dundundundun...

The GHOST came.

Tadaah!!!

This is how the ghost looked like:

Horatio and the two dumb guards tried to stop me from seeing the ghost but I ran off and they couldn't follow me. Seriously people, what kind of guards are these, cannot even run after some crazy fella like me? No wonder something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

And as for the ghost... it was my father. It looked like him and spoke like him and wore his armour... I'm sure it was him, not some evil demon who wants to mislead me. And my poor daddy... he has to suffer in purgatory where he will pay for his sins. My poor daddy *sniff sniff*. But I still love you daddy...

Yeah, anyway, he's gonna be stuck there for a while. And he's pissed at Uncle Claud because he killed him. While he was asleep. In the garden. Apparently Uncle Claud killed him by pouring poison in his ears. Ew...

And Uncle Claud is a wuss. A craven hearted coward. CAn't he fight my father face to face for the throne? How dare he call himself a man if he cannot fight another man face to face in a duel, instead of poisoning people.

COWARD!!!!!

And he's also very sad because mum married Uncle Claud. But he made me promise not to hurt her because it will be God who will punish her for being unfaithful and incestuous. Besides, it's not gentlemanly to hit a girl/woman.

Here's my daddy again:

So in the end, I promised my daday that I will take revenge for him. That I will avenge his death. That Uncle Claud will die for his treachery.

And then daddy disappeared. Waaaah!!! *sob sob* Daddy... will I ever see you again? *sniffles*

Finally, Horatio and the two dumb guards caught up. They said they gout lost or something. So stupid one, this people. What lah, here also can get lost! Why I speaking in Manglish, one?

Ahem-hem.

I made them swear on my sword to never speak of this incident again or I will hunt them down and kill them (muahaha!!) They didn't want to do so, at first, but then daddy did his spooky voice and scared them so much that they did as I ordered them to (and I think that one of the dumb guards --Marcellus, I think-- pissed his pants). And then, I told Horatio about my ingenius plan.

Hi. Hamlet here.

Life is suckish. Today was my mother's wedding with MY UNCLE!!!! (Don't they understand how gross that is? And I can't believe that the priest actually allowed them to marry, they must have bribed him or something.) Anyway, I think my dad is probably turning in his grave.

My dad. *sobsob* My dad is dead. It's already been a month since his death but -but *sniff* I STILL can't get over it...
Who will tuck me into bed and read me stories before I go to sleep now ? Certainly NOT Uncle Claud. When I asked him once, he told that I was a big baby because I needed a someone to tuck me in and read to me. And he took away my nightlight and laughed when I told him that the monsters under my bed would eat me. Said that it was good riddance.

I HATE HIM!!!!!

*pout*

Anyway, I didn't go for their wedding. I spent the whole time angsting in the bathroom and contemplating suicide.

Only when the wedding was almost over I came out and watched him give some stupid speech about how he missed my dad (yeah, right) and how he was so happy about marrying my mom (I'm sure you are you horny ass) and how he had plans to deal with the problem of Fortinbras (yeah, like he has any kind of knowledge of politics; it's potty Polonius who is doing all the work).
And then Laertes sucked up to him and asked him if he could return to Paris. He said it was to study but I know that he actually has a girlfriend there. Three girlfriends actually. Ophelia told me.

And then he talked to me and told me to stay even though I had plans to continue my studies. I pretended not to hear him but then my mom asked me to stay to and I decided to obey her because she is my mom and I didn't want to leave her alone with this bastard.

So I said I would stay. Now I'm doomed.

Anyway, they went off to get drunk amd stuff so I stayed behind in the hall as everyone left.

And then I think I started ranting or something. I can't remember. I now it was something about incest (or was it insects?) and satyrs and gardening and weeds or something. And women. And stuff. I'm sure. I think the blood loss made me lightheaded (I cut my wrists again in the bathroom).

Then Horatio came in and said he saw my father. Actually it was a ghost that looked like my father. I don't think he is lying because he looked scared and he's a very rational and sensible person. Not like those stupid supersticious guards. I am going to the guardpost with him tonight to see it for myself. After all I had a bad feeling about my dad's death and this ghost might give me some answers.

Hey guys,

I think almost all of us would have known by now that results are out on the student portals. Go check it out if you haven't yet. Stop cursing your own classmates to get results that are more horrible than yours. It's not nice.

Okay. Those who have already seen your results. You are either completely happy about it. OR (like me) still recovering from a massive shock. Yeahh....

Anyways. I'd just like to know how's the holiday been? Any good? Did anyone actually study...? Okay. Awkward question. But dear classmates, one thing I'd like to highlight here is that

there is a possibility that...
we're gonna be combining with PL1 after the holidays.
Although I have yet to confirm this piece of information, it seems pretty likely to happen.

NOTE: NO alcoholic drinks allowed. Anyone bringing booze will not be allowed entrance. You're gonna have to walk back (or pour the booze down the drain. Your choice.). Tough luck.

FAIL LOR!

Damn jobless tonight LOR! Moral is out the window. Literature analysis' due next Monday, so as Thinking Skills. The past 3 weeks were crazy. My bedtime was taken away and I only slept 3 hours before I had to wake up. For a pig like me, HOW IS THAT ENOUGH YOU TELL ME!! So fail LOR! Every morning go to college - feel like dying. While driving, my eyes get tired and very heavy, and I tend to shut both my eyes for that 1 second. Last week, I almost had a surprise when I opened my eyes. (almost ran into a matrix) Awesome right?

Okay. I shall stop talking about myself. Haha!

Long weekend coming up! Wish each and everyone you the best weekend - take care of yourselves. LITERATURE STUDENTS -- JANE EYRE IS OVER LA WEIH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its been two weeks of holidays and are you guy ready for college again?!!

sorry folks, but there is another change in the price for the trip.

because we cant make payment by credit card, as Maeve is not going, nicholas helped us to booked the hotel room and paid by cash today.

so now, the new total for family suite per night is RM 170

plus the transportation fees,

the GRAND TOTAL : RM 41 per head.

so, to those who hadnt pay yet, please pay me RM 41 on Mon, and as for those who paid yesterday, please pay another RM 4 on mon too.

its me Irene again.. hahahha...

below are the details for our upcoming trip!!

Date: 7/4/09 - 8/4/09 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
Time: Will tell you as soon i get the bus tickets, but its confirmed to be in the morning =)
Meet at: Taylor's UC (those who live near Sentral bus station can go by urself...)
Coming back in the evening the next day. ^^
Price:RM37.30 per head (only accommodation and transport to and fro including cable car)
Hotel: family suite of Genting Theme Park Hotel. (if i m not mistaken, the room is pretty big...)

Sociology Experiment aka The 'Date'

Hi, this is Simone. Many have been asking how my 'date' with Wen Shen was. Sorry if I was a bit short with you guys when you asked about it; I was feeling a bit funny from all the caffeine (I usually don't drink coffee).

Anyway, we went to AC (not Starbucks) and... talked, lah.

What else?

Basically the whole 'I' and 'Me' thing (For non-socio people, please ask your nearest socio friend). Talked about our views on anarchy, society and how our surroundings have influenced us. Talked about hobbies, interests...

Made plans to overthrow the government and rule the world... Muahaha!!! Though we'll probably end up kiling each other... anarchists, mah! (Just joking. But we did speak about democracy and dictatorship, and all that.)

Anyway... it was very enlightening. At least I'm not the only psycho around. In fact we've established that I'm a bit more 'anarchist' than him, he has... moderated slightly.

So that's all.

hey yo everyone!! so, details about redang trip:

Date: 6-8 April 2009 or 7-9 April 2009 ( if u guys want to go for 4 days 3 nights please do let me know ya!! we will follow the majority..)

Place: Redang Bay Resort ( its simple, but the service is good and price is the cheapest, and u get to do whatever u want...eg, chill out with a big bunch of ppl by the beach...haha..anyway, its a very peaceful place, not like other resorts that are full with ppl all times...we get to own the whole place there!! =P) (anyway, if u have other suggestions do let me know =D )

Price: below rm450 (rm 300 or below for the resort, and the rest for the air tickets, depending on how early we book, so guys, be fast k? =D shuttle bus from terengganu airport to the ferry port and ferry ride to the island plus shuttle bus to resort will all be provided...food will b provided at all times, its quite a good deal actually^^ will negotiate with the resort again once i get all ur details on fri)

more details: we will be going for snorkeling , and maybe jungle trekking too if u guys are interested...but the main purpose of this trip is to chill out and relax, so i dont plan much for now...we can have our own games at the beach, or u can watch d movies u want at their mini cinema....they also have a swimming pool there...i have been there before, trust me, its nice!! so if u wanna ask anything regarding the trip, please do contact me (0126351368) u can always bring a friend or invite ppl from other classes...
